Plumbing a Post and Bracing It

Brace the post in two directions and check it twice, once after the pour and once an hour later. The Geometry Is Unforgiving

Which Way to Lean It

Bracing Properly

Both Posts Together

Plumb is not enough on its own. The two posts also have to be parallel to each other, square to the run, and separated by the correct clear opening at both top and bottom. Run a string line between them and measure the gap at three heights before the concrete goes off, since after that the only remedy is a new hole.

Leave the Braces Longer Than Feels Necessary

Braces come off when the concrete is genuinely set rather than when it is firm on top. A post knocked at the wrong moment, by a wheelbarrow or a dog, moves the whole footing in the fresh ground and there is no sign of it afterwards except a gate that will not line up.
