It Is Not a One Day Job, and That Is Correct
The common expectation is a single visit that starts with an empty driveway and ends with a working gate. A properly sequenced installation is two visits with a curing period between them, and an installer who offers to do it all in one day is offering to hang a leaf on a footing that has not cured. The finished gate looks identical on the day. The difference appears in year two.
The First Visit
Setting out, excavating, positioning the posts and pouring is usually most of a day for a vehicle gate, longer if ground conditions are awkward or the holes need pumping. Posts are braced plumb and left. If power is being run to the entrance for an operator, the trench and conduit go in during the same visit while the ground is already open, even if the electrical work happens later.
The Wait
Several days, depending on mix and weather. This is the step under most commercial pressure and the one with the least to show for it. It is also the step that determines whether the posts stay where they were put. Warm weather shortens it, cold and wet lengthens it, and the installer's judgement on the day is worth more than a fixed number.
The Second Visit
Hanging, truing, fitting the latch or lock, and setting the drop bolt if it is a pair. This is quicker than people expect, often half a day, because the hard work is already in the ground. The line people believe is the boundary is frequently the line of an old fence, a hedge, or the edge of a driveway, none of which are the same thing. A gate is a permanent structure with a footing, so building it in the wrong place is expensive to undo and awkward to leave. Where there is any doubt, the survey plat settles it before the design does.
Walk the Swept Path
The arc a leaf will travel through has to be clear, level enough, and stay that way. Slope across the path is the item most often missed, because a driveway that looks flat frequently falls a few inches over the width of a gate. What the Footing Is Actually Resisting
A gate post is not mainly holding weight up. It is resisting being rotated out of vertical by a leaf hanging off one side of it, and that rotation is what a footing has to defeat. Understanding that changes how the hole is dug: depth gives leverage against rotation, diameter gives bearing area against soft ground, and the two solve different halves of the same problem.
Sand Offers Less Lateral Support
Firm cohesive soil grips the sides of a footing and contributes real resistance. Loose sand contributes much less, so the footing has to do proportionally more of the work by itself. In practice that means going deeper and wider than a general rule of thumb would suggest, and it means the shape of the hole matters. A hole belled slightly wider at the base resists being levered upward in a way a straight sided one does not.
The Water Table Is a Working Condition
Close to the water, a hole of any depth may begin filling before concrete goes in. Placing concrete into standing water dilutes it at exactly the point where strength is most needed. Pumping the hole out, or using a mix designed for wet placement, is the difference between a footing that reaches its design strength and one that never does. Discovering this at the pour is too late to plan around.
Drainage Around the Post
Water that collects at the base of a post keeps the surrounding ground saturated and keeps the steel wet where it enters the concrete. A footing crowned slightly above grade so water runs away, rather than dished so it pools, costs nothing at the time and removes the single most common corrosion site on an installed gate.
Curing Time Is Not Negotiable
Concrete gains most of its strength over days, not hours. Hanging a heavy leaf on a post the same afternoon loads the footing while it is still weak, and the small amount of rotation that happens then is permanent. The gate looks correct because it was trued while being hung, and it is already out. Waiting is unglamorous and it is the cheapest quality step in the whole job.
